Accounting software comparison
A plain-English comparison of QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, Zoho Books and Wave.
Accounting Software Comparison
Choosing accounting software is mostly a question of fit rather than quality — QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, Zoho Books and Wave are all capable, and the right one depends on your country, your transaction mix and whether you need stock, multi-currency or CIS.
We work in all of these, so we have no reason to push one. What follows is what each is genuinely good at, and the type of business it tends to suit.
QuickBooks — the default in North America
- Best for: US and Canadian small businesses wanting the widest accountant and bookkeeper familiarity
- Strong bank rules and receipt capture out of the box
- Class and location tracking for departmental reporting
- Desktop version still suits businesses needing detailed inventory
- Weaker on multi-currency than Xero
Xero — strongest ecosystem
- Best for: e-commerce, multi-currency and businesses running several connected tools
- Hubdoc included for automatic document capture
- Genuinely good native multi-currency handling
- Large integration library, which matters more than it sounds
- Unlimited users on every plan, unlike most competitors
Sage — depth for UK operations
- Best for: UK construction, manufacturing and stock-heavy businesses
- Construction Industry Scheme handled natively
- Detailed stock control and bill of materials
- Multi-company consolidation in Sage 200
- Steeper learning curve than the cloud-native options
Zoho Books and Wave — the lighter end
- Zoho Books suits early-stage services businesses already using other Zoho tools
- Zoho's pricing is competitive at low transaction volumes
- Wave is free at its core tier and popular with Canadian sole traders
- Both are capable but thin on advanced reporting and stock
- Both are straightforward to migrate away from once you outgrow them
If you are already on one of these and it is working, the honest answer is usually to stay. Migration has a real cost and should be driven by a specific limitation, not a feature comparison.
