The checklists we actually run
These are our internal sequences, not lead magnets. No form, no email address, no download — just read them or copy them.
Checklist 1 of 3
Month-end close checklist
The sequence we run every month. Work through it in order and the close stops producing surprises.
Reconcile every bank, credit card and merchant account to statement
Clear the suspense and uncategorised accounts to zero
Match accounts payable to supplier statements
Review aged receivables and flag anything over terms
Post accruals and prepayments for the period
Reconcile payroll liabilities to the payroll journal
Update the fixed asset register and post depreciation
Reconcile stock or work in progress if you carry it
Reconcile the sales tax control account
Review the P&L against prior period and explain movements over your threshold
Lock the period so the closed month cannot move
Checklist 2 of 3
Year-end preparation checklist
Start this eight weeks before your year end and the statutory process stops being a fire drill.
Confirm your year-end date and every filing deadline that follows it
Reconcile all balance sheet accounts and attach supporting schedules
Confirm the fixed asset register agrees to the ledger
Review and write off genuinely bad debts
Count stock and reconcile to the ledger
Confirm director and related-party transactions are recorded
Reconcile loans and finance agreements to lender statements
Gather bank confirmations and closing statements
Review revenue recognition and deferred income
Prepare the tax computation workpapers
Agree the review and filing timetable with whoever signs off
Checklist 3 of 3
Software migration checklist
What to settle before moving accounting platforms, so you don't migrate a problem.
Pick a cut-over date that follows a closed, reconciled period
Export a full trial balance and transaction history from the old system
Clean and map the chart of accounts before importing anything
Agree how much transaction history you actually need to migrate
Migrate open AP and AR items individually, not as a balance
Rebuild bank feeds and check the opening balances match
Recreate recurring invoices, bills and journals
Re-point integrations: payments, payroll, e-commerce, expenses
Run both systems in parallel for one period and reconcile the difference
Reconcile the sales tax position across the cut-over
Archive the old system in a readable, exported format
